RailwayDofollow vs nofollow directory links: what actually changes, and why nofollow listings are still worth an hour
Founders sort directories by 'dofollow' and skip the rest. That throws away the review sites and communities that send real traffic and get read by AI assistants. Here is how the attribute works, how to check it in ten seconds, and how to weigh both.
"Is it dofollow?" is the first question in every directory thread, and it is the wrong first question. It is worth knowing the answer — we publish it for every directory in our catalogue — but treating it as a filter loses you most of the value a listing has.
What the attribute is
There is no such thing as a dofollow attribute. A normal link is
<a href="https://yourproduct.com">Your Product</a>
and search engines may treat it as a vote for the target. "Nofollow" is the addition of a rel value telling them not to:
<a href="https://yourproduct.com" rel="nofollow">Your Product</a>
Since 2019 there are two more values with the same effect: rel="ugc" for user-generated content and rel="sponsored" for paid placements. Google treats all three as hints — it may still count the link, but you should assume it does not. Redirect links through the directory's own tracker (/go/your-product) are effectively nofollow too, since the link points at the directory, not at you.
So "dofollow" simply means the directory chose not to add any of those. It costs them nothing to add it and protects them from spam, which is why the largest platforms — Product Hunt, G2, Capterra, Indie Hackers — are nofollow.
What a dofollow listing gets you
Link equity toward your Domain Rating and, in aggregate, better rankings for pages the directory links to. One link from a DR 80 directory page moves a new site's DR noticeably; the tenth link from a DR 40 directory moves it barely at all. Two caveats that matter more than the attribute:
- The linking page has to be indexed and have some authority itself. A dofollow link on a category page nobody links to, on a directory with ten thousand such pages, passes almost nothing. DR is domain-level; equity is page-level.
- Conditional dofollow is common. Many directories are dofollow only while you display their badge, only on a paid tier, or only after the product reaches a rank. Our table marks these "badge / paid" and the note says which. Decide whether you want their badge in your footer before you count the link.
What a nofollow listing gets you
Three things, and for most early products they are worth more than the link:
- Referral traffic. People browse directories. A nofollow link on a page that gets visitors sends visitors. A dofollow link on a page that gets none sends none.
- Entity signals. Search engines and AI assistants build a picture of your product from every page that mentions it consistently: same name, same description, same URL, same category. Nofollow does not switch that off. When someone asks an assistant for "alternatives to X", the review sites and directories it pulls from are mostly nofollow.
- Reviews and time. G2 and Capterra profiles compound. The link is nofollow forever; the fifty reviews you collect over two years are the single strongest B2B trust asset you can show a buyer or a prospect.
Check a link in ten seconds
Open a live listing on the directory, right-click the link to the product, choose Inspect, and read the rel attribute on the <a>. If the href goes to the directory's own domain (a /go/ or /out/ path), it is a redirect and counts as nofollow regardless of rel. Do it on a real listing, not the directory's homepage — the homepage often links to a few featured products differently.

How to weigh them when your afternoon is limited
Sort by two columns, not one:
- Dofollow + DR ≥ 50 + free: do all of them. This is the link-equity list. Our directory finder gives it to you with three checkboxes.
- Review sites: do them this week regardless of link type, because the clock on reviews starts when the profile exists.
- Communities and launch platforms: schedule them; a launch deserves a day, not a form fill.
- Nofollow general directories with low traffic: skip, unless they are vertical to your niche.
